Arjun Singh Cheema clinches gold at Khelo India University Games, eyes Paris Olympics

Guwahati, Feb 27 (IANS) After a stellar performance at the Khelo India University Games 2023 Ashtalakshmi, Arjun Singh Cheema secured a gold medal in the 10m Air Pistol event. The 22-year-old shooter is now aiming to secure a spot in the Paris Olympics scheduled for July-August.

Currently ranked third in India for the 10m Air Pistol category, Cheema is determined to capitalize on his recent success at Guwahati to make it to the Olympic squad. His victory has boosted his confidence and he is focused on achieving the qualifying mark.

Cheema’s impressive display at the Kahilpara Shooting Range showcased his mental strength and determination. Despite finishing seventh in the qualification rounds, he maintained his composure in the finals and emerged victorious with a total score of 242.5. He credited his success to a combination of factors and emphasized the importance of consistency in performance.

The shooter highlighted the support system that has played a crucial role in his journey. From his parents and friends to his sports psychologist and government support, Cheema acknowledged the collective effort behind his achievements. He also expressed gratitude towards the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) for providing the necessary resources for his training and competitions.

Cheema’s success at the Khelo India University Games has not only propelled him towards his Olympic dream but has also highlighted the significance of government support for athletes. By participating in events like KIUG, athletes have the opportunity to showcase their talent and receive the necessary backing to pursue their sporting goals.
